Constitution Day and the Legacy of American Liberty

Written by Kimberly Fletcher

On September 17, we celebrated Constitution Day. That is the day that, in 1787, the Founding Fathers signed the Constitution and established the freest nation on Earth. Despite the many challenges faced by the United States of America, our nation has blossomed into a place of liberty and equality for all. The principles at the core of the founding apply to all men and women. Where there has been oppression in America, the principles of the Constitution, when realized, have brought liberty.

This is the legacy that President Donald Trump spoke about at the White House Conference on American History. Standing before the Constitution in the National Archives Museum, President Trump said, “On this very day in 1787, our Founding Fathers signed the Constitution at Independence Hall in Philadelphia. It was the fulfillment of a thousand years of Western civilization. Our Constitution was the product of centuries of tradition, wisdom, and experience. No political document has done more to advance the human condition or propel the engine of progress.”

These facts are obvious to people who come to America from other parts of the world. The dream called America has been attracting people from around the world for hundreds of years. It is here that children from the most humbles beginnings could hope to attain an education and advance in the world in a way that is still not possible in almost any other part of the world.

But, as President Trump went on to describe, that legacy of liberty enshrined in our Constitution is under threat. The angry mobs in the streets and the ivory tower intellectuals are spreading the false and divisive narrative that America was founded on oppression and not freedom. While our nation has been far from perfect, our history has been one of expanding freedom and a greater realization of justice with each generation.

In response to the threat of critical race theory and divisive curricula that seek to divide us, President Trump said, “We are here today to declare that we will never submit to tyranny. We will reclaim our history and our country for citizens of every race, color, religion, and creed.”

Why is history so important? As President Trump observed, “In order to radically transform America, they must first cause Americans to lose confidence in who we are, where we came from, and what we believe.” The radicals attempting to indoctrinate school children know this. The unrest in our streets is fueled many times by the lies taught in the classroom.

This is an insidious threat: the indoctrination of our children turning them against the principles of true liberty. However, once we identify the threat, we know what our response must be. As President Trump stated, “There is no more powerful force than a parent’s love for their children. And patriotic moms and dads are going to demand that their children are no longer fed hateful lies about this country. American parents are not going to accept indoctrination in our schools, cancel culture at our work, or the repression of traditional faith, culture, and values in the public square. Not anymore.”

As moms, we know this is true. What our children believe about America and its founding begins in our homes. The conversations we have around our dinner table shape the way our children understand their heritage more than any class they will take in school. As parents, we also have the right to decide what kind of education our children receive. Concerned and patriotic parents are waking up to the indoctrination and speaking out against it.

As the Trump Administration the “1776 Commission” and establishes the National Garden of American Heroes, we must do our part in our homes and in our communities to learn our history and pass on the legacy of liberty.
