Moms For America Statement on State of Florida’s Rejection of Certain Math Books

Branson, MO – Today, Moms for America leadership released the following statement in support of the decision by Governor Ron DeSantis’ administration to reject math textbooks that did not meet the state’s educational standards and improperly included topics such as Critical Race Theory (CRT), Common Core, and unsolicited topics other than math.

“I applaud Governor DeSantis for yet again standing up for our children and protecting them from radical topics such as critical race theory,” said Kimberly Fletcher, President of Moms for America. “It is unimaginable that a math book would teach something other than numbers and arithmetic, but in today’s world, radicals keep finding ways to indoctrinate our children in what is supposed to be the safest environment: the schools.”

“Governor DeSantis and the Florida Department of Education are not being hyperbolic in their assessment of critical race theory, woke ideology and Common Core in textbooks,” said Quisha King, Senior Director of Moms for America. “These books are not even trying to hide their unsolicited curriculum. One of the ‘features and benefits’ of the Savvas Learning Company’s math book titled Thinking Mathematically, which is now a restricted textbook, says, ‘new applications include student-loan debt, movie rental options, measuring racial prejudice, and many more.’ How exactly do you ‘measure’ racial prejudice? After all, we were told that CRT wasn’t being taught in K-12. This is just more evidence of CRT being deeply embedded into schools across America.

Students are struggling to pass math at their grade levels. The last thing they need is more CRT when they’re not even getting the math basics.”
