Four Things that Make American Moms Powerful and Effective
There are probably millions of stories about courageous and powerful American moms.
We think of mothers whose influence made the history books, like Harriet Beecher Stowe, author of the culture-shifting novel, Uncle Tom’s Cabin, or Abigail Adams, a First Lady known for her wisdom, and the mother of a US president. Then there’s Lucretia Mott, noted abolitionist, humorist mom Erma Bombeck, Betsy Ross, who stitched our beloved Stars and Stripes, and Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett, mom of seven.
Of course, we can never forget our beloved Gold Star moms who raised our nation’s heroes and bear their sacrifice with patriotic courage.
American greatness is found in all her mothers, though. Consider your grandmother, and your own mom – each of us can take our place among the creative and heroic mothers who have made their mark on America and the world. Because American moms mean business.
One especially influential mom comes to mind for me. In many ways, Kimberly was just a regular mother, like you and I, until a sunny September morning in 2001 changed her perspective forever.
Planes flown by heartless terrorists plunged into New York’s iconic World Trade Center that day. Across the nation, we stared at our TVs, stunned, wondering if we were at war. As the carnage held Americans spellbound, Kimberly learned that the Pentagon, where her husband worked, had been breached by the thunderous explosion of a crashing plane.
September 11th changed so much. The way we travel, the way we think of terrorism, and it shattered the illusion that our nation was far enough away from the world’s chaos that we would be safe from attack. As she breathed a prayer of thanks that her husband returned safely that night, Kimberly was also changed. She describes that the tragedy and heroism of that day brought her from “being patriotic to being a patriot.”
Many of you will recognize that I write of Kimberly Fletcher, a mom who began a movement, one you are a part of – Moms for America. As her vision was born, she realized that the normal powerbrokers, Congress, politicians, and kingmakers were not the answer to bringing America back. The power, she realized, was in the home and with the influence of our nation’s moms.
What are the things that give mamas in our great nation the ability to influence, engage, and ultimately affect change in a troubled culture? Moms are beautiful, talented, tenacious, and so much more. This week, we will focus on four things that make American moms powerful and effective.
1. She Protects Those She Loves
In recent years moms have been challenged in new and unexpected ways. As schools shifted from reading, writing, and arithmetic to CRT, LGBTQ-laden curriculum, and disdain for the United States, facilitated by educators, you weren’t having it. When 2020’s remote schooling revealed the depth of our educational decline, moms were agitated – and activated.
It was the beginning of a massive mama bear movement, which has grown stronger each year, and we continue to hold the line, protecting our young. We are standing between our innocent children and those who would indoctrinate, intimidate, and discriminate. We are claiming our parental rights – and wielding our influence on school boards and in the halls of local government.
Since the pandemic, forces have attempted to strip parents of their Constitutional rights to protect their children from secret gender transitions facilitated by schools, racism lessons (CRT) designed to demean and discourage, and disgusting school-sanctioned pornography. Ideologues had been secretly influencing schools and students with harmful agendas – until moms found out. Then it was on.
Some families chose to remove their kids from public school, bringing them home to receive a higher-quality education free of the sexualization and chaos of their neighborhood school. They are heroes who have changed their kids’ lives and the trajectory of their future.
Other moms ran for school boards– and won. They petitioned principals, governors, and legislators, and would not back down. Their – and your – influence has been felt more powerfully than ever in these last few culturally tumultuous years.
Moms protect – no matter what. If you want to step up in your community for the sake of your family, we invite you to get involved. We have ways to plug in here at Moms for America, including Cottage Meetings and Groups. We share information about choosing the right school option for your child, guidance for getting involved with your local school board, and more. Your voice and your influence are needed, mama – and we want to help.
2. She is a Patriot
American moms are patriots. They understand the price that was paid for the incredible freedom and prosperity we enjoy. America is unique in the world for its form of government, Constitution, economic system, and dogged protection of individual liberty. There is truly no place like it.
We’ve seen a surge of moms determined to study the lessons of our history, equipping themselves to teach the new generation of patriots they are raising. If you are looking for resources to go deeper into our storied history, we offer webinars and classes, providing the tools to strengthen your knowledge base and resolve.
Where school has neglected to teach key elements of our history, like the Mayflower Compact, the Revolutionary War, the Constitution, the truth about the fight for civil rights, and other ignored topics, we teach the proud truths and full history to our young.
Moms like you and I raise our children to feel gratitude for the many gifts of liberty, and we celebrate and commemorate our historic milestones and holidays. We wave the flag, deck our houses in red, white, and blue, and never bow to those who would demean our great land.
Patriot moms faithfully participate in elections, both national and local, and show our children what it means to be an engaged US citizen.
Moms help their kids touch history by planning visits to historic sites that tell our great American story. If you are considering a patriotic getaway for your family, check out our Liberty Trips Map, where you can discover many exciting places to explore. Some may be closer than you think!
3. She Never Gives Up
Moms face hard times with grit and determination. The family may face any number of trials, from financial stress, unemployment, illness, or devastating loss. Though we may grieve or struggle, the lesson to our children is clear. In this family, we do not give up.
Something about the way God wired moms gives us an inner strength that serves as a haven to those we love. It doesn’t mean we don’t collapse in a heap once in a while or hide in the closet with a pint of ice cream on a rare occasion. The truth is, when the chips are down, American moms like you can weather the storm. We may not make it through unscathed, but we wrap our kids in our arms and stand firm.
One such mom is featured on this week’s podcast. Maralee McLean fought relentlessly against injustice. Her daughter was sexually molested by her father. When Maralee tried to save her from the horror, this brave mom was the one who was accused of falsehoods about him despite much evidence to prove her claims. She never gave up and saw new legislation, “Julie’s Law,” signed in Colorado to protect abused children like her own. Don’t miss her story of courage and determination.
4. She Knows the Source of Her Power
Our nation’s strength is rooted in a foundation of faith. Despite debunked claims to the contrary, our United States was founded on biblical principles.
American moms like us know that God is our source. He is the one who strengthens us with courage to never give up. His power gives us the grit to protect our children in the face of danger. He empowers moms to run for office or stand up to a school administrator who tries to diminish their influence with their own children. The Lord is able when we feel weak, and He is the American mom’s secret source of strength.
The Apostle Paul urged us in 1 Timothy 2:1-4, “first of all that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people – for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in godliness and holiness.” We are committed to praying diligently for our nation, city, our children’s schools, and teachers. As moms, we teach our children that they can talk to God about anything and everything – anytime.
We arm ourselves by reading the Bible, knowing that God’s Word is “alive and active”. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. (Hebrews 4:12)
To further strengthen our family’s faith, American moms root themselves in a local church as active and engaged members.
Maintaining a strong faith-life can feel like a lot with so many things pulling at us, but trust me – it is a source of stability and hope that can help your children grow strong and true. If you’re feeling like this has not been a strong point in your life, it’s never too late to turn to God. Simply start by opening your Bible, and consider the Gospel of John to reacquaint yourself with the foundation of faith in Jesus, the Word made flesh. And talk to God about it. He’s listening – and will help.
More attributes could be listed that illustrate the many ways American moms are an undeniable force for good. Mamas, you have more talent than you imagine – you have more purpose than you may have considered, and you have a voice that needs to be heard. We hope you’ll join us in reclaiming this culture and guiding our families toward a hope-filled future in America.
